Green Temple, Spirituality and Environment

By Sagar Saud

When we talk about a temple, we generally talk about a temple made up of concrete or wooden one which is really artistic and keep cultural, religious, and historical importance. We have seen so many such temples, especially in Nepal and India because these two countries are Hindu-dominated ones.

But there are so many “Green Temples” or Tree Temples” in Nepal and India.

A tree temple is a Temple that is culturally and religiously worshiped in the Hindu religion which is decorated with red, white, black, yellow Dhoja, Pataka, Tul, Trishul, Ghanta, flagstrinities, and bells rather than a concrete temple of stone and wood.

Hindu religion the Peepal and the Bar trees are worshiped with holy faith. The Peepal tree which gives us much oxygen is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Bishnu (the supreme God of the Hindus) and the Bar tree is considered to be Goddess Laxmi (wife of Lord Bishnu).

Green Temples or Tree Temples have great environmental importance. It is because the Hindus do not destroy or harm them. They have true reverence for Nature.

If this way, trees are to be saved; they can assist to protect nature. We can put a sense of love and faith in human beings towards Nature. In the Hindu scriptures like Vedas and Purans, there is greater faith, reverence, and respect for the Earth. There is an appeal for human beings to save the Earth. I think, perhaps, our ancestors used to worship trees, hills, stones, rivers, water taps (Pani Dhara), and such entities to generate a sense of respect for Nature or the Earth.

That's why the concept of “Green Temples” can help to arouse a sense of love and respect towards the Earth. This can help us to save the environment of the whole world. But necessity is of the action. Worship the tree and respect the environment.
